Masterclass Workshops

Masterclass Workshops

Due to COVID-19, these workshops will be rescheduled — likely in the fall 2020.

Offered through The Writers’ Community of Durham Region, Writescape’s Gwynn and Ruth will deliver two full-day workshops in 2020 for writers who want an in-depth focus on aspects of fiction, memoir and non-fiction. Writescape workshops provide practical helpful handouts, engaging in-class exercises and discussions, and professional facilitators.

Give a full-day focus on editing your own work with Find and FixLearn how to identify flaws in your manuscript and then explore practical ways to make effective changes. More than tips on typos and grammar glitches, this workshop will focus on structural and stylistic issues we most often see in client manuscripts: saggy middles, flat characters, and missed opportunities for effective description and plot development. Make changes directly to your manuscript or use in-class exercises to apply new skills.

Making a Scene will dive deep into the mechanics and benefits of creating engaging scenes. Explore essential elements of plot development in fiction and memoir. From developing dynamics of high tension to choosing when to slow down critical emotional scenes, how a story is paced is a vital tool for writers. Setting, characters and images propel your narrative and enhance the reader’s experience. This workshop will enrich your understanding of the craft.

Location: Whitby Campus of Durham College is a modern, accessible building close to Highway 401 and Thickson Road exit.

Registration and payment online at WCDR; non-members are welcome
