This class takes the intermediate or advanced writer into rich and challenging creative territory. Figurative language, experimental texts and focussed critique (both giving and receiving) will be explored through a variety of hands-on in-class exercises and advanced take-home assignments. Further refine your editing skills and use new techniques on works in progress while experiencing the benefits of creating new work in a community of writers.

Be prepared to go deeper and further with your writing and take some interesting risks with your approach to creativity. Gwynn and Ruth create a comfortable space for all genres and types of writing. Feel free to query if you are not sure if this is the class for you.

For a typical Writescape retreat, each day is divided into segments that balance creativity sessions of exercises and activities, private time for writing and reflection or to enjoy any of the facility’s amenities, feedback sessions, meals and group activities.  At Spring Thaw, we offer written manuscript evaluation from both Gwynn and Ruth on up to ten ms pages. Early in your retreat, you will receive your one-on-one private feedback sessions with either Gwynn orRuth. (Deadline to submit your manuscript is March 15, 2011). Artists attending the concurrent ArtEscape retreat on April 15-17 will participate in group sessions and may chose to attend the creativity sessions. They will also receive feedback on their portfolio and in-progress work from Margaret.

Breakfast and lunch are offered buffet-style in our main cabin; participants can linger and visit with each other, or put together a quick take-away meal and return to their private room and carry on writing.

Dinner is held in the Hearthside Dining Room at Elmhirst’s Resort, complete with white linen tablecloths and candlelight. A view of Rice Lake at sunset adds to the feeling of being “away”, and spirited conversations and laughter are the norm.

Each evening, we hold group sessions that include sharing of work, group feedback and discussions.

It is important to note that all activities and creativity sessions are optional. We will happily offer any handouts and exercises to participants who bypass an activity to keep working on their material. We do encourage everyone to attend the opening and closing group sessions as well as the dinners because good things come out of getting to know other writers and their work.

The two-day extension for writers on April 18 and 19 will be strictly devoted to writing during the day, with optional evening group feedback sessions. Limited to 10 participants maximum.

Who Has Seen the Wind, The Kite Runner or Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone would all be very different narratives if they had been set elsewhere. The literary landscape defines what is possible and what is impossible.

But place is much more than location. How you design and deliver landscape details in your fiction can affect plot, mood, tension, reader involvement, unity and character. The landscape can even become a character itself.

Explore these concepts and put them into practice in this hands-on workshop. Learn how to create believable and workable settings. Learn when, what and how much to describe without slowing the story.

Gwynn Scheltema

is an award-winning fiction writer and poet and winner of the 2007 Timothy Findley Creative Writing Award. Her stories have placed in the Toronto Star Short Story Contest, the Canadian Authors Association contest, and the Writers Circle of Durham Region short story contest. She was a founding fiction editor for Lichen, Arts & Letters Preview, and her fiction and poetry have been published in Canada and Europe in literary journals, anthologies, and magazines.

Gwynn is fascinated by words and enjoys sharing her love of language. She works as a professional writer and editor and has taught for over 25 years, at community colleges, private colleges, government conferences, retreats and day and evening workshops.

Starting January 10, award-winning writer Ruth Walker will be offering a six-week writing workshop at the Whitby Public Library. Each two-hour session will explore one main element or aspect of creative writing, such as:

• finding inspiration and ideas
• developing characters and setting
• establishing plot and theme
• practising freefall writing
• polishing work to submission standards.

Classes include fun and innovative hands-on exercises, engaging group discussions and feedback opportunities. Open to any level of experience in  fiction, non-fiction or poetry, Playing with Words is an adult program for ages 16 or older.

Ruth E. Walker’s first fiction submission won the Canadian Living magazine’s story contest in 1996. Since then, her fiction, poetry and non-fiction has been published in Canada, the UK and the US. An artist in residence in education with the Durham District School Board, Ruth runs a successful freelance writing and editing business. She was a founding editor and publisher for LICHEN Arts & Letters Preview and has led writing workshops and courses in high schools and at the community college level, as well one-day sessions and week-long retreats. A long-time Whitby resident, Ruth is a member of The Writers’ Community of Durham Region and is a partner in Writescape workshops and retreats. She is the co-author of Inspiration Station, Writescape’s pocket-sized retreat companion.

Spend the day exploring a time-honoured story-telling form. From true-life diaries such as “The Diary of Anne Frank” to fiction favourites such as “Clara Callan” and “Griffen and Sabine”, the epistolary form has been used to tell richly imagined stories. Whether through correspondence or personal journals, writing through the letter format creates special challenges and exciting rewards for writers at all levels.

Ruth E. Walker is an award-winning writer and poet, whose fiction, poetry, and non-fiction have appeared in Canada, the US, the UK, in such literary publications, anthologies, and periodicals as Prairie Fire, CV2 – Contemporary Verse 2, River King Poetry Supplement (US), Rain Dog (UK), Canadian Children’s Literature, Signatures, Canadian Architecture and Design, Canadian Living, The Toronto Sun, New Brunswick Telegraph-Journal, and others, as well as online in Internet publications. She has twice won the Dan Sullivan Memorial Poetry Contest, was a semi-finalist in the Chapters/Robertson Davies First Novel Competition, won 3rd prize in the 2007 Banff Centre Bliss Carman Poetry Award competition, and has been nominated for a National Magazine Award in the poetry category.

As a playwright, her work has been staged in local community theatres and public venues including the Whitby Courthouse Theatre. In 2008 StoneCircle Theatre hosted staged readings of her most recent play, ”The House of Mrs. Glass”, in their New Play Development program.

A graduate of Trent University and a professional writer and editor for the Ontario government, Ruth is also a founding editor and publisher for the literary journal LICHEN Arts & Letters Preview (1998-2007); a past president and long-time member of The Writers’ Circle of Durham Region; a past founder and organizing committee member of the Words in Whitby Reading Series; a current Board of Directors member for the Driftwood Theatre Company; a long-serving volunteer on various non-profit arts initiatives; and a creative writing workshop facilitator. In 2007, Ruth was named one of four artists in residence at Durham Alternative Secondary School, through an Ontario Arts Council-funded pilot project.
